Fed: Composer Richard Meale scoops classical music awards

Self-taught composer RICHARD MEALE has picked up two classical music awards for hisThree Miro Pieces.

Judges describe it as being a significant addition to contemporary Australian orchestral music.

The 71-year-old from Sydney scooped the pool at tonight's Australian Music Centre ClassicalMusic Awards.

He took out best composition by an Australian composer as well as orchestral work of the year.

A panel of judges chose Mr MEALE'S work from 23 nominations and says the piece displayshis maturity as a composer.

Mr MEALE, who worked for seven years in the music department of the ABC, is also knownin musical circles for forging the way for avante-garde music in Australia.

Mr MEALE describes himself as a terrible struggler, who must graft, sometimes for severalyears, before anyone else can hear the music as he does.

But, he says after almost seven decades he's getting better.
