RL: Trindall suspended by Bulldogs
SYDNEY, Aug 26 AAP - The Bulldogs suspended halfback Darrell Trindall from all furtherassociation with the National Rugby League club following an incident at Canterbury LeaguesClub early today.
Police were called to Belmore in the early hours of this morning following reportsof an altercation.
Ambulance officers treated a 36-year-old Belmore woman for head injuries before shewas taken to Canterbury Hospital.
A short time later a 30-year-old Botany man was stopped by police, breath-tested andarrested for drink driving.
The man was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and granted bail toappear before Burwood Local Court on September 10.
He was also issued with a summons to appear before the court over the alleged drinkdriving offence.
The Bulldogs have declined to comment further.
Trindall joined the Bulldogs last season from England after a falling-out with officialsat Super League club St Helens.
He helped the Sydney club to the finals in 2001, but lost his spot this season to BrentSherwin and has made only four first grade appearances.
However, he was back in the spotlight last week after being named among a group ofBulldogs players who were receiving payments from the club outside the salary cap.
The Bulldogs were subsequently docked 37 points and fined $500,000 by the NRL afterinvestigations revealed the club had breached the cap by more than $1 million over thepast two seasons.
The disgraced Bulldogs are now at the bottom of the NRL ladder and certain to finishthe year with the wooden spoon.
The club will also be forced to slash player payments next season to get under theleague's $3.25 million limit.
Trindall was expected to be one of the players offloaded by interim chief executiveSteve Mortimer and his three-man management committee, who will meet tonight to discussan appeal against the NRL's tough penalty.
